Director

Karen L. Butler-Purry

Karen Butler-Purry is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an Associate Provost for Graduate and Professional Studies emerita at Texas A&M University. She was Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs in the College of Engineering from 2001-2004 and Associate Department Head in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department from 2008-2010. She received her B.S. (summa cum laude) in Electrical Engineering in 1985 from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was awarded her M.S. degree in 1987 from the University of Texas at Austin and her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1994 from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

During her over 30 years at Texas A&M University, Karen has served at all faculty levels, beginning with an appointment as visiting assistant professor of electrical engineering in 1994. She has received numerous awards in including the 2025 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring for efforts to mentor students from underrepresented groups and for leadership in promoting PhD careers for them in electrical engineering and computer sciences. Her research interests are in the areas of computer and intelligent systems application to power distribution systems, distribution automation and management, fault diagnosis, estimation of remaining life of transformers, intelligent reconfiguration, system modeling and simulation for hybrid vehicles, and cyber-physical system security.

Current Graduate Students

Khalid Al-Assaf

Khalid Al-Assaf is a Ph.D. student from Jordan with a passion for electrical engineering. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2020 and joined the PSAL research group in the fall of 2021.

His research focuses on power system protection and active distribution systems, contributing to the advancement of modern grid technologies. Khalid finds great fulfillment in teaching and mentoring students. Outside academia, he enjoys watching movies and spending time with friends.

 

 

 

Darius Gray
Darius Gray received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Math and a Certificate in Leadership Study and Development (from the School of Military Science) in 2011 from Texas A&M University. He started a Master of Science in Energy Degree in 2023 and joined the Power System Automation Lab within the ECE Department at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. He spent a little over 9 years working as an Electrical Engineer at a municipal electric utility in the Transmission Department.

Outside of work, Darius enjoys spending time with friends, Bible studies, ancient Middle East history, playing trumpet, and sports.

 

 

 

Adel Heidari-Akhijahani

Adel Heidari-Akhijahani received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran, in 2017, and the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2020. He started the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX in 2022.

His research interests include distribution system optimal operation and resiliency, electric vehicles’ integration into distribution systems, and service restoration.
Edwin Tenkorang

Edwin is a first-year PhD student from Ghana. He earned his B.Sc. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2022 and is passionate about power system automation and cyber-security.

His current research focuses on developing cyber-physical testbeds for distribution systems security. Edwin is an avid fan of pickleball and a dedicated multi-genre music connoisseur. In addition, he enjoys mentoring younger researchers and never passes on a mentorship opportunity!

Irfan Ullah

Irfan Ullah is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. He completed his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar and earned his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from COMSATS University Islamabad.

His research focuses on distribution system resiliency, renewable energy integration, and the optimal operation of power distribution systems before and after extreme weather events. Irfan enjoys photography, working out, and playing sports like badminton, pickleball, volleyball, and cricket. He also loves watching and enjoying Aggie sports and is proud to be an Aggie!

 

 

 

Current Undergraduate Students

Daniel Adegbenro

Daniel is a third year undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He is very interested in the energy sector and joined the PSAL group in the fall of 2025 to further his knowledge of power systems. Aside from electrical engineering, Daniel enjoys reading and playing soccer.

 

 

 

Alexis Bunta

Alexis is a junior at Texas A&M majoring in electrical engineering who wants to work in the energy/power sector. She is from the greater Houston area (specifically Pearland, TX), and enjoys listening to music, working out, occasionally playing video games, and swimming.

 

 

 

Haorui Li

Haorui is an undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He  has a keen interest in power systems and joined the PSAL research group in 2024.

His research focuses on simulation and analysis of distribution systems, and their optimization by utilizing machine learning techniques. Haorui’s hobbies include fishing, playing and listening to music, and sports.

 

 

 

Juan Lopez

Juan is an undergraduate student at Texas A&M University, He is currently working towards a Bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering. He enjoys playing soccer and guitar.

 

 

 

 

 

Emmaus Redda

Emmaus is an Electrical engineering major interested in power systems and engineering, with the goal of diving into renewable energy and energy storage. Emmaus enjoys playing guitar and sports in his off time.

 

 

 

 

Tanmay Sindhwani
Tanmay is a Senior undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He joined the PSAL research group in Summer 2025, where his work focuses on the simulation and optimization of distribution systems using CYME software. Tanmay is currently contributing to research on the integration and impact of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations on power grids. In his free time, he enjoys listening to music, hiking and going to the gym.
Jacqueline Villanueva

Jackie is a senior undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering looking to pursue a career in the power and energy industry. She has a background in power distribution systems and power generation due to previous internships with Magic Valley Electric Co-Op and Calpine.

Jackie joined the research group in Spring 2024, and her focus is learning about analyzing the integration of EVs and PVs in power systems. In her free time, she enjoys reading and writing fictional stories.

 

 

 

Dylan Yi

Dylan is an undergraduate student in the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Multidisciplinary Engineering with a concentration in Mechatronics. He joined the PSAL research group in the 2024 Fall semester.

His research focuses on simulation and optimization of distribution systems utilizing machine learning and pattern recognition techniques. Dylan’s hobbies include working out, listening to music, and hiking outdoors.

 

 

 

Jayeon Yoon

Jayeon is a Junior undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He joined the PSAL research group in 2025, motivated by his interest in developing reliable and sustainable power systems. His research focuses on Power Distribution System Modeling and Analysis, including areas such as load data processing, comparative analysis of DER performance, and optimal power flow analysis. In his free time, he enjoys working out, traveling, and listening to music.

 

 

 

 

Brian Zhou

Brian is a Junior undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He joined the PSAL research group in 2025 to explore his interest in Power Systems. In his free time, he likes to play volleyball, pickleball, or go bouldering.
